Sponsor Watch: LawPath

Sponsors are a huge part of Hackagong. Without the generous contributions from our sponsors, we wouldn’t be running this awesome Hackathon! This is Sponsor Watch, where we take a quick look at one of our sponsors.

What does your company do?

We provide businesses with easy, cost-effective online legal solutions. Through LawPath you can customise legal documents, register a company or trademark, and ask free legal questions to our network of 500+ Australian lawyers.

How did your company first get started? What’s the origin story?

LawPath started in February 2013, with a goal of making legal services more affordable and accessible. Our team consists of successful entrepreneurs, technical and legal professionals who are very excited to be bringing exciting innovation to the legal industry.

Why did you sponsor Hackagong 2014?

Being a disruptive business ourselves, we are always excited to see how technology and innovation can change our perspective on how things operate. We also know (from first hand experience!) that hackathon teams often overlook the necessary legal steps when choosing to pursue their ideas, so we’re hoping to provide an easy and cost-effective alternative.

Has your company ever held internal hackathons?

Not yet, however plenty have been held at Tank Stream Labs since we’ve been here. You can always rely on our team to be picking the contestant’s brains… and their leftover slices of pizza :-).

What is the most awesome thing or project your company has done?

We’re really proud of our co-founder agreement. It’s a completely free agreement that you can complete within minutes using our technology. It allows you to set out the ownership, initial investments and responsibilities of co-founders – something that could have prevented plenty of high-profile founder disputes (think Facebook and Snapchat).

You should check it out, it definitely beats using the back of a napkin! https://lawpath.com.au/legal-documents/co-founder-agreement

What’s an internal/industry problem your company would like to solve?

The legal industry is said to be the most archaic industry in the world. The traditional legal processes have not changed for over 100 years.

We believe that through technology we can change the legal industry and make it more affordable and efficient. The traditional legal system charges you in 6 minute intervals…why should you have to pay for a lawyer to fill in your name and address on a document or a follow phone call?

We empower the customer to complete legal documents themselves and then have the finished documents checked by a lawyer. This means that you get legal solutions at and fraction of the price that are still signed off by a lawyer.

What are you most looking forward to at Hackagong 2014?

We can’t wait to see the pitches on the Sunday – if a great idea can be communicated effectively in 3 minutes then chances are it’s a keeper. Also, the Slot Car tournament sounds like great fun! Any chance of a team LawPath entry?!?

Are you currently hiring and if so, what type of person are you looking for?

We’re currently looking for a talented front-end developer to join our team. The most essential thing we look for when hiring is passion – we’re very keen to bring on people that love what we’re doing and want to assist us in bringing technology and innovation to the 21 billion dollar legal industry.

What trending technology are you most excited for over the next 5 years?

We believe that electronic and digital signatures will have a huge impact on the legal industry over the next few years. It’s a no-brainer when you consider that ~48% of documents are printed solely so that they can be signed!

Having to print, sign and scan documents is annoying and inefficient. Electronic signatures are legally binding in Australia and will change the way we deal with legal documents.

Hackagong thanks LawPath and our other sponsors for their generous contribution for this years event.
